Choke City Podcast - East vs West Showdown

Post by GreenBear »

Hi everyone,

With the upcoming ASG, I had what I thought would be a fun idea for an East vs West Showdown exhibition game. Take a listen:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xz5HLueTjQ8

Western Roster
PG - Shaquille Harrison / Marcus Smart / Donovan Mitchell
SG - Malik Monk / Donovan Mitchell / Malik Bridges
SF - Jayson Tatum / Joe Ingles / Mikal Bridges
PF - Justice Winslow / Rui Hachimura / Michael Kidd-Gilchrist
C - Karl-Anthony Towns / Marvin Bagley / Michael Kidd-Gilchrist

- A podcast for the Eastern Conference Roster with Marcos will come out shortly, followed by a podcast to talk about the simulation of the East vs West showdown.

While the West is all about defense, the East will try to win it by having great offensive players around the best playmaker in the league in Lonzo!

Our roster will be the following:

PG: Lonzo Ball / DeAaron Fox / Elfrid Payton
SG: Trae Young / Dante Exum / Elfrid Payton
SF: Brandon Ingram / Otto Porter / Dante Exum
PF: Ben Simmons / Zion Williamson / Stanley Johnson Jr
C: Anthony Davis / DeAndre Ayton / Stanley Johnson Jr

Some fantastic names were left out and could even form a “Team B” for the East. We’re going to talk about them in the podcast!
18-19 Chicago Bulls: CSL Champions
#1 D.Rose #11 J.Holiday #21 J.Butler #42 A.Horford #13 J.Noah

29-30 Philadelphia 76ers: CSL Champions
#1 L.Ball #15 M.Beasley #23 B.Bowen #21 M.Wagner #51 K.Towns

I like the idea. I think Doug focused on countering marcos and it looks like itll pay off. One thing that could mess up the Wests matchups would be to start Simmons at SF and SJJ at PF. Tatum will be forced to guard one of Simmons or SJJ.

Little busy right now, so have to wait a bit to listen to it.
But great idea.

I pick the east with 2 of my players on board ... good choice Marcos :-)

I also wonder that Rozier is not on the roster at all and if the 2nd unit of the West could beat the 1st unit ?? The players in the 1st are without question 5star player, but I like the mixture of the bench.

Yeah, love this idea as it makes the league ASG a little different this year. I'm clearly a homer, but I think that Eastern team is stacked and well balanced so I think they will take it this year (again), but its going to be interesting to see how the GMs strategize for the game.

Pretty cool stuff and will be interesting to see how different these rosters will likely be from the ASG. Happy to see MKG and Donovan get some love up there.

He isnt efficient enough is my guess and would take shots away from the more efficient players. Similar to how he does with you and parker.

cool that the western starting five is just the Houston Rockets with some bums subbed in so that it wouldn't be too overpowering

This is a completely correct team construction project but it is psychotic to imagine an all-star team with Guler/Mitchell over Rozier/Doncic.

Regardless, a fun listen to get inside the head of one of the better CSL GMs

The East would still win this game pretty easily imo. Their depth alone is just stupid. They could push the tempo, get key West players into foul trouble, and just bowl over anyone

The minimum 6 minute rule could really hurt the west with some of their selections. Imagine Guler stepping on the court when it couldve been Smart. I like the mitchel selection but rui/bridges/guler/ingles, that is 24 minutes the east will feast.

Smart is a great player that I heavily considered. In a vacuum, he's better than Guler no doubt. I had serious concerns about his ability to hold up at PG with his 67 HDL against the likes of Ball and Payton. Especially since he likes to drive so much. I really think there's a good chance they would've had a field day with him out there.

When it came to SG, I just thought there were guys like Mitchell that were just as good defensively but more efficient offensively (and less TO prone). Especially given how high usage he is.

Just my personal thought-process though. As I mentioned in the podcast, I'm sure every GM would have a different roster. There's no wrong answer.

So curious to see see how it shakes out!!
Yeah Smart came to mind for me too. I'm a big fan of him and he would be probably in my starting 5, but Doug knows what he is doing.
Have to listen the the podcast to hear his reasoning I guess ....

Haven't had a chance to listen yet, but it's clear there's some anti-Pacific stuff going on here by choosing Mitchell over Dozier :P
Golden State Warriors
Kris Dunn | PJ Dozier | Ding Yanyuhang | Kevon Looney | Chimezie Metu
Devonte Graham | Nimrod Levi | Tariq Owens | Johnny Hamilton
'23: 34-48 (5-8 as GM)
'24: 40-42, 1st Round Exit
'25: 50-32, Championship Round Loss (4-3)
'26: 48-34, 1st Round Exit
'27: 44-38, Missed Playoffs
'28: 39-43, 1st Round Exit
'29: 57-25, Championship Round Loss (4-2)
'30: 48-34, Conference Finals Loss (4-1)

Was finally able to listen in.
The reasoning makes sense and I think the West has a decent chance to beat the East. It's just one game and the team is indeed set up more like a "regular" league team compared to the high talent of the East.
If it would be best of 7, my bet would be on the East though.

Since Guler got traded to the East, Marcus Smart has replaced him on the West's roster.
