Here are the exact numbers he could get.

Edit: Unploaded the wrong pic, sorry.

PS: All the numbers posted so far are way off. You guys didnt even keep in mind the 105% rule which makes him way richer if he stays in SA. Just sayin'.

Dennis - your math is wrong - you're compounding the raises. And I did include the 105% rule, which doesn't just apply to SAS, it applies to any team trying to sign Durant at any point in his career. Also, I rounded down to $21m because you rounded every other contract last offseason - technically, every 7-9 year player was supposed to make $21,099,041.40.

Here's the real math:

Initial 3-Year Deal, No Bird Rights
Year 1 - $21,166,553
Year 2 - $22,119,048
Year 3 - $23,071,543
Year 4 - $24,500,000 (new 5-year contract, with bird rights)
Year 5 - $26,337,500
Year 6 - $28,175,000
Year 7 - $30,012,500
Year 8 - $31,850,000
Year 9 - $33,442,500 (new 2-year contract)
Year 10 - $35,950,688
Total - $276,625,331

5-Year Max Contract
Year 1 - $21,166,553
Year 2 - $22,754,044
Year 3 - $24,341,536
Year 4 - $25,929,027
Year 5 - $27,516,519
Year 6 - $28,892,345 (new 5-year contract)
Year 7 - $31,059,271
Year 8 - $33,226,197
Year 9 - $35,393,122
Year 10 - $37,560,048
Total - $287,838,663

And here's how your proposal looks:
Year 1 - $21,166,553
Year 2 - $24,500,000 (new 5-year contract, no bird rights)
Year 3 - $25,711,538
Year 4 - $26,923,077
Year 5 - $28,134,615
Year 6 - $29,346,154
Year 7 - $30,813,462 (new 4-year contract)
Year 8 - $33,014,423
Year 9 - $35,215,385
Year 10 - $37,416,346
Total - $292,241,553

.... I mean, to accuse Chili and me of being wrong.... and then to be off by $70m in your proposal is pretty funny. It's just a conversation man, no need to be so absolute.

Here are the real ones, I uploaded the wrong one as I really had a mistake in my calculations when doing it the first time.
Sorry for that. Still way richer in SA.

Ignoring the fact that your comparison isn't apples to apples....

Your example is predicated on Durant signing a one year deal in SAS, then being in S&T'd the next off-season. That makes no sense. The only reason we're even having this conversation is because there is the potential he wants to leave SAS, not stay on for another year, carry the team, then be right back in the same position.

Plus, who in their right mind will commit to pay $37m (the correct math) to a 37 year old Durant? He's awesome, but he'll have undergone 5 ratings downgrades at that point. Do I need to remind anyone what Kobe Bryant looks like at age 36? And he's only making $25m, which I think most would agree is aggressive.

Not sayin' that version two is likely. It is #1 or #3. And in #1 he will get way more than by signing with another team. He will get most likely a max when 32. But I can't see anyone signing him for another max when he's 35/36 to make up for the money he lost by signing with another team.

PS: and sorry for being absolute. But didnt you call Jeff arrogant this morning? Anyone did and that got on my nerves.

It was the way he handled a trade conversation re: Durant that I thought was unnecessary and arrogant.

The numbers show even more why Durant being portrayed as Greedy wouldn't rely solely on SAS as his home for next season when teams can offer him nearly as much AND a better situation unless Spurs make a tremendous trade.

I think the death knell which alot of GM's foresaw was the Jeremy Lin max deal last season, that pretty much tied their hands, not saying Lin is immovable as teams could use a PG of his caliber but that price tag is very steep.

He would get way less if he signs with another team. No one would pay him 30+m when he's 35+.

More to the point, his loyalty is his second highest rating, and the disparity between greed and other ratings is huge. 90 vs 60 (Loyalty) vs 50 (Winning). PT doesn't matter here because everyone will give KD all the minutes.

He should be a spur but definitely on a short term deal to see how they improve.

I agree that the player's personality attributes should definitely be taken into account to some degree, but (as someone else already pointed out) if that's all we're going to look at, then we might as well just use the in-game free agency.

In my opinion, loyalty means very little in Durant's case because he just got traded to SA last offseason. It's not like he's played his whole career there. Kinda like how Dwight had no problem leaving LA when he got traded there the year before his contract expired.

Greed certainly plays a factor, but I think it means more to mid-level talent or fringe stars. I think a fringe star with very high greed would take a near max contract (~$15 mill/yr) with a crappy team over a ~$10 mill/yr contract with the mother team (or a contender/better situation). But when you're dealing with megastars, I think greed matters less. When you're talking about guys getting max offers from all over the place making well over $20 mill/yr, a couple mill here or there doesn't matter as much. I think that's why you see so many all-stars changing teams in the NBA. Do they not care about money? I'd bet they do, but again, we're talking about guys making a boatload of money no matter where they decide to go. Does a couple mill trump a better situation elsewhere? That's up for the agents to decide. I'm not saying SA is a bad situation. Not at all. But they're not a true contender (even with Durant) at the moment. They're a solid team. That could change by before the FA period though.

I could see Durant landing a number of places, including back in SA. But I think it's a bit oversimplified to say he's definitely going to land in SA just because his greed is high.

I think greedy players care about each and every last dollar. Carmelo being a prime example. Lebron would be an examole where winning was his top attribute unlike melo.
