Cavs Talking Extension?

Post by Rizzo »

As the season creeps closer and closer to the All-Star break, the Cleveland Cavaliers and their new management are looking to lock up a couple of their younger building blocks. Both being selected in the top-4 of the 2011 CSL Draft, fans of the Cavaliers would be heartbroken if they were to lose either of these two guys. One is the face of the franchise while the other is the defensive anchor in the paint, but both play a vital part in taking this franchise to the top, something LeBron James couldn't do.

The obvious option to be extended is Kyrie Irving. The top pick in the 2011 Draft and the second leading scorer in the league (30.3 ppg at time of publication), Irving is one of the most dynamic point guards in the league. The kid scores in a variety of ways be it slashing to the rim, pull-up midrange jumpers or knocking down the three ball. When you think you've figured out how to stop him, he still finds a way to get a bucket. On top of scoring 30 a night, he's dishing out close to six assists on top of it. In a time where the league is seeing many more scoring point guards running the show, there aren't many better than Kyrie.

The other player Rizzo is looking to extend is power forward Tristan Thompson. After selecting him with the 4th pick in the same draft with Irving, he is a young big man that does the dirty work for this team. The previous regime has played him out of position at the small forward spot but Rizzo looks to get him back to his natural power forward position to allow him to get the ball where he is more comfortable for better scoring opportunities. His numbers have dipped this season but Cleveland thinks moving him back into the post will help him match his numbers from last year at the very least.

Yeah Kyrie and Tristan are your two core guys. So it only makes sense to extend them as soon as possible. No idea about your cap situation. But as they are RFA anyway it might be better to wait for the offseason to not waste cap space (no idea if you don't have any anyway)

Give Kyrie a max and wait to see how much Thompson is worth as RFA, in my opinion.. This way you don't piss off your star and gambles on a guy that may or may not reach double figure salary next year..
