One would think that the current Spurs and their 6-1 record could easily be the story of an episode of The Twilight Zone. How is this team that is more raw than a homemade porn movie doing so well to start the season? We all know that Cyrisnyte has never been deemed a master of tactics. Yet here they are sitting with a record that let's be honest, no one believed would be reality.
Let's be honest first, they haven't exactly played teams with superior records (no offense to these other teams). The combined record of the Spurs opponents this season so far is a paltry 17-33, Orlando's sole win coming in their season opener against the Spurs. So let's not get to excited about a team that has been taking advantage of the bottom feeders this early in the season. The Spurs get a test tonight against the Knicks (4-4) in a division that is stocked full of powerhouse teams.
Where the team is shinning is on the defensive side of the ball though. The Spurs are currently allowing 96.6 ppg, which is 4th in the CSL. The overall defensive rating for the Spurs is 100.0 which is the 7th best rating in the CSL. While the offense is still trying to find their place (more on this later) the defense has been keeping them in games more often then not.
The offense is coming from everywhere for the Spurs so far this early season. Through 7 games they have had 6 different leading scorers so far. Multiple games have seen 5 or more players in double digit scoring to spread around the workload amongst a young team. Most shocking may be the most recent win against the Hawks where Eric Stuteville put up a high of 26 points. We have seen AD lead them in scoring twice, Ante, Shittu, ZDK and Jackson to go along with Stuteville.
Certainly this cannot continue? Again, lets be honest, even a broken clock is right twice a day. The actuality that the Spurs continue on this pace is not realistic. Some luck in the early scheduling has made the Spurs look better than they actually are. The next 4 games see the Spurs on a home game against the Knicks tonight then on the road at the Pelicans (5-2), 76ers (4-2) and the Knicks (4-4). Coming out of these next 4 games the Spurs could easily go from 6-1 to 6-5.
Then again, who knows what their record can be in side The Twilight Zone.
