Advanced stats: Teams edition (27/28 season)
Today we have another edition of our advanced stats series. We look at how teams are actually performing on different facets of the game as of February 26th, 2028, in-game date.
The first stat that we present is the one that I think gives a the best idea of a team's true performance: scoring ratio. That is, points scored divided by opponent points. There are five teams with a scoring ratio over 1.05, which is pretty good. At this point, last season there were seven teams above that figure. These are the five best teams in this category currently:
1. Miami Heat: 1.121
2. Boston Celtics: 1.075
3. Sacramento Kings: 1.065
4. Dallas Mavericks: 1.059
5. Milwaukee Bucks: 1.053
The Heat numbers are amazing and speak for themselves. They are the top candidate for the title, in my opinion. Of course, come playoff time matchups play a big role, and these numbers are regular season averages. As for the bottom of the CSL, there are six teams below 0.95 (last year at this point of the season there were five teams below that figure):
25. Portland Trailblazers: 0.939
26. Chicago Bulls: 0.930
27. San Antonio Spurs: 0.926
28. Washington Wizards: 0.916
29. Atlanta Hawks: 0.913
30. Orlando Magic: 0.895
These six teams are also the bottom six teams record wise. As expected, scoring ratio is a great indicator of a team's performance. Nothing surprising here. Next we have a more vague indicator as it is the rebounding ratio (team rebounds divided by opponent rebounds). This does not give a powerful indicator as the scoring ratio, but still gives a good idea of a team potential to have and prevent second chances. There are nine teams above 1.05 (last season, five):
1. San Antonio Spurs: 1.141
2. New York Knicks: 1.109
3. Detroit Pistons: 1.107
4. Sacramento Kings: 1.091
5. Brooklyn Nets: 1.090
6. Milwaukee Bucks: 1.087
7. Dallas Mavericks: 1.071
8. Los Angeles Clippers: 1.063
9. Miami Heat: 1.054
The Spurs case is worth mentioning here. They are the most dominant team on the boards, yet they cannot take that advantage to win many games. Past the overall game, if we focus on offensive production we have two key stats: true shooting percentage and points per 100 possessions. The former yields five teams over 55 % and one just at that mark:
1. Houston Rockets: 57.74 %
2. Miami Heat: 57.61 %
3. Charlotte Hornets: 56.07 %
4. Boston Celtics: 55.17 %
5. Dallas Mavericks: 55.16 %
6. Sacramento Kings: 55.00 %
The Hornets case is also a curious one. They have a top three offense in terms of efficiency but they are not translating that in the standings. If we look at points per 100 possessions, we find nine teams scoring over 105 points per 100 possessions:
1. Miami Heat: 114.83
2. Houston Rockets: 107.83
3. New York Knicks: 107.57
4. Boston Celtics: 106.92
5. Sacramento Kings: 105.57
6. Brooklyn Nets: 105.49
7. Detroit Pistons: 105.24
8. Denver Nuggets: 105.12
9. Phoenix Suns: 105.07
Defense is just as important as offense. If we take a look at defense in those two categories we get close to a full picture. There are six teams keeping opponents below 52 % in true shooting percentage:
1. Toronto Raptors: 50.49 %
2. Milwaukee Bucks: 51.17 %
3. Los Angeles Clippers: 51.20 %
4. Charlotte Hornets: 51.23 %
5. Sacramento Kings: 51.88 %
6. Boston Celtics: 51.94 %
Worth mentioning again the Hornets. They are the third most efficient offense and the fourth best team limiting opponent shooting efficiency, yet they are currently out of the playoffs (0.5 games behind the eighth seed). Their problem may lie on the boards (0.972 rebounding ratio) and protecting the ball (second most turnovers in the league). If we take a look at opponents points per 100 possessions, we find five teams keeping opponents below 100 points per 100 possessions and another one right at that number:
1. Milwaukee Bucks: 97.02
2. Dallas Mavericks: 98.70
3. Charlotte Hornets: 98.94
4. Sacramento Kings: 99.17
5. Boston Celtics: 99.42
6. Indiana Pacers: 100.0
We will be back with more advanced stats.

Good to see us mentioned in all categories but rebounding. But yes, thst is our weakness I’m aware of. Would have loved to fix it, didn’t find a fitting trade though.

interesting that Grizzlies are not in any of the categories - I suppose it means we'll get hammered in playoffs
Congrats to season 16 ASL champion SoulKey. For the Swarm!

We suck and are nowhere to be found
The top dogs all feature in this one so we have to work harder even if we plan to suck lol
Can’t be stuck in the middle of the pack going nowhere.

Re: Advanced stats: Teams edition (27/28 season)
This is a great article and shows teams where their weaknesses are and how they should approach the offseason.
The Hornets are the best case study here in that they are a good team, but missing a couple key ingredients to be a great team that can make a true playoff push. If Dejan can put it together, they seem like they have the potential to be a top 4 team in the East.

They dont have the potential to be top 4 anytime soon, but they have been pretty unlucky they should be 7th right now.emplep7 wrote: ↑Tue Apr 05, 2022 1:12 pm This is a great article and shows teams where their weaknesses are and how they should approach the offseason.

Re: Advanced stats: Teams edition (27/28 season)
Great article Manu, love these.
The Hornets definitely are an interesting case. Just not translating to wins at the moment but if they can sneak in, they might give the one or two seed a good series.
We're going well in these advanced stats given it's based on regular season averages and being mentioned between 3 and 6 in every category.

Bit late, but nice to see our defense is on point, we can defend against any team at any time, the trick if finding efficient scoring.
Nice work here.

As always a deep view into the league standings.
Unsurprisingly nothing to see of the Hawks ... yet.
