We have been talking about careers in school with my 8th grade students and while you always have the students that want to be in the NFL or the NBA, I try to give them the statistics on what percentage of high school athlets actually get a D1 college scholarship. From there I show them the statistics on the percentage of D1 college athletes that go to either the NBA or NFL through the draft. Needless to say, the odds aren't in anyone's favor.
So I brought up to a few of them that they could strive to work for a Sports Agency and it seemed like they took an interest in the idea. My question is:
If you were to try to explain the responsibilities of a Sports Agency to middle school students, what would you tell them you have to do? So far I have:
- sign players to the agency
- negotiate agent percentage with player (earn percentage of the contract/signing bonus)
- call teams on behalf of player to negotiate contract
- train agents to be licensed in different sports
- market players for exposure/popularity
- sign endorsement deals for equipment
- manage training sessions to improve skills

Also building good relations with teams’ managers might prove very important for any agency.

Yeah agents always want to have great relationships with front offices and media members as well. They definitely leverage those those relationships whenever they need to to suit their clients.

Didn't think about relationships with the front offices. That makes a lot of sense and something I'll have to take into account as well.
Keep the ideas coming, fellas!

Re: Responsibilities of a Sports Agency?
Basically being an agent is being able to relate well with front offices, coaches, other agencies, business partners.
In a world where literally everyone can do your job (well, some worse, some better, but all can do it, including the player himself), the one with most influence and who knows more people will always have better "transit" and more business opportunities.
Network and good reputation is key here, that's basically the aspect you need to focus mostly. Trust me, as good as you are in your job, if you don't relate well with people in this area, then you're a lost case.
