RAPTOR++ / First Edition 2020-2021 CSL Season

Post by Chilikonkarne »

For those who don’t know RAPTOR++, it is a tool that combine the ratings of each player (70%) and his efficiency in game (30%). Their capacities are weighted in order to value good rebounding for bigs for example.
The % in game is also considered in the ratings which probably change the balance from 70/30 to 60/40.

The tool premiere objective is to evaluate players value when it comes to trade or free agency. It has it flaws with some defensive aspects not taken into consideration (%STP, PA/SF).
However, I believe it bring a good overview in general and was well received the last years by the league.
I decided not to include team record since I like to compare the players over the years.

2020 - Stanley Johnson Jr. - Oklahoma_City_Thunder : 24.9pts, 45%, 0.9ast, 10.1rbd, 0.7stl, 0.6blk in 31.8min / EVAL: 89.5
2019 - Stanley Johnson Jr. - Oklahoma_City_Thunder : 22.5pts, 45%, 1.1ast, 10.4rbd, 0.9stl, 0.5blk in 32.7min / EVAL: 86.5
2018 - Stanley Johnson Jr. - Oklahoma_City_Thunder : 20.3pts, 48%, 1.1ast, 10.5rbd, 0.8stl, 0.4blk in 30.3min / EVAL: 85.7
2017 - Stanley Johnson Jr. - San_Antonio_Spurs : 14pts, 44%, 1.1ast, 6.6rbd, 0.6stl, 0.3blk in 28.3min / EVAL: 71.8

Filter : A player has to play more than 20 minutes a game and at least 10 games to be eligible.

Here we go for the Top10 ranking by position - first edition of the season!

Considering how stacked this draft class has been with their initial performances, I'm thrilled to see Diallo crack the honorable mention list. RotY is still Teodosic's to win, but Taylor could sneak in there if he gets the Phoenix wins halo effect - especially since he's their leading scorer! :o

Nice to see Wood in the Top 10, but I think he'll drop and Middleton will climb back in, just based on how Memphis and I's systems will differ if the starting point is anything to go by. Be interesting to see if KD will pass Kawhi for the #1 spot at SF. Dekker at #10 is just weird to me - don't know how he gets that high, or why so many GMs like him. One of the great mysteries. I suppose. Phenomenal season by PG so far, but after a hot start, the Magic look to be who we thought they were

I can't believe how well Isaiah Taylor is doing. Thats almost ridiculous as a rookie. Its down to him and Milos depending how the rest of the season plays out.

4 - Terry Rozier - Oklahoma_City_Thunder : 12pts, 45%, 2.3ast, 3rbd, 0.9stl, 0.3blk in 20.2min / EVAL: 85.2

Shame he's out another 50 days but his efficiency has been on point this season.

In terms of the RAPTOR++ system, Taylor has no shot of dethroning Teodosic for the top rookie spot. Since 70% of the evaluation is based on ratings alone, the overachievers are fighting a (steep) uphill battle. I like his chances based purely on his on-court performance though. His 21 points are on incredible efficiency. His overall shooting of 51% doesn't even do it justice because he gets to the line so much (8.2 attempts per game). The fact that Teodosic is running away with the top spot despite not having a single steal or block on the season (as well as pedestrian rebounding and assist numbers) tells me that Teodosic is going to hold the top spot no matter what this year.

Thats true. I guess the real test will be the GM voting for rookie of the year, which Taylor should definitely have a shot at especially with some more pre-award articles to inform the masses.

Good stuff, weird to not see Harris on this list for once, especially since he's having a good start, oh well. Milos, and Boban on here, and hopefully Tristan will work his way back here since he will get starter minutes again.
Big changes are coming in D.C.

Harris is 15th and Tristan didn't play enough game to qualify

Glad to see Cotton and Bojan on there. Expect to see Dante and still think he deserves to be higher but know this is purely data driven so I get it.

As for Taylor, I still think Doug is a cheater. There is no way he is that good. I didn't scout him or anyone else but there are certain teams that I feel you can drop anyone into and they perform well. Once they're traded, it's never duplicated. CHEATER! :P

Haha the efficiency would be easily duplicated on any other team. He came into the league with shooting preferences that didn't need to be fixed, and his shooting ratings (inside the arc) were always projected to be good. His volume of shooting is something that could differ. It's partly that my team doesn't have many overpowering scorers (especially with Austin down at the moment), and partly due to managing the lineups to surround him with guys that will give him the ball more. It can be replicated, it just takes a little more work (and having the game helps). Taylor's scoring rating is 65 and he's scoring 21 points a game thus far, but it's the exact same scoring rating as Middleton, and no one batted an eye when he averaged 21 points a game last year with Memphis.

The all rookie bust team is the same as the all rookie defense team
Cordinier/Gbijini/Bender/Ellenson/Poeltl
or
Trice/Cordinier/Gbijini/Bender/Poeltl

Boston and Miami seem to have really targeted defensive players in this yrs draft.

Disappointed to see that neither Traevon nor FVV worked their way into the Top 10 of rookies + honorable mentions, but that just shows how much work they still have to do. Hopefully this helps inspire them moving forward.

On the other hand, Lance being #5 at SF is awesome. He's been on fire this year and is showing he's still a great volume scorer.

Haha I think we both knew defensive players don't fight for the ROY award. Hence it's okay how they perform right now. I still see kawhi and okaro potential in cordi and Gbi. Trice was disappointing so far though.

Love seeing the Nets at #2 at PG (John Wall) and #5 at SG (Dion Waiters).

This is why Myles Turner most likely won't ever crack the top-5 as he currently sits at #6.

Payton and Porter have flipped roles a little this season. Payton was struggling last season with Porter solid but now Porter struggling with Payton having a good run.

Westbrook is a little off stats wise but mainly due to one or two bad games. We're reasonably well represented though.

The % in game is also considered in the ratings which probably change the balance from 70/30 to 60/40.
