San Antonio: Most would consider the selection of ZDK at #6 in this year's draft as their first big decision, but those close to the Spurs Front Office shared that the office was shocked he was even available at #6 that his selection was a no-brainer. Going into the offseason, the Spurs were planning on building around Graham and Gant with a defensive minded players being added in the draft and then going after a go to scorer in Free Agency. With the selection of ZDK, this has changed the Spurs offseason plan dramatically.
The first big decision the Spurs have made this offseason is that they have traded last year's pick, JaKeenan Gant, who was one of the top rookies last year, for a player the team believes will be a better fit next to ZDK. The Front Offices has communicated to ZDK and his family, that they plan on building around him and envision him as the next KD. It is expected the trade will be officially announced once contracts are renounced in the upcoming days.
The Spurs are now working on their Free Agency plan with their focus expected to be in the front court. Look for the Spurs to pursue player like Justise Winslow, Dragan Bender, & Pascal Siakam early in free agency. The team is armed with over $40MM in cap space and the team is wanting to make a push for the playoffs next season.
