proposing new draft time slot rules

Post by KW »

instead of fixed time slots, in our football league CSFL, we have a flat time frame for teams to make their picks, rather than all these 24 hour delays.

My proposal is similar but slightly different from the CSFL's, since we have a lot more GMs across the world here.

Round 1: The timer starts as soon as the previous pick is posted. You have 8 hours to make your selection.

Round 2: Deadline of 4 hours after the previous pick was posted.

* If you know you're going to be working/asleep/away for whatever reason and your pick is coming up, send a list to admins.

* Extensions of 4 hours allowed as long as you communicate with the league that you need the extra time.

* In the CSFL, if you miss your time slot without communication, your remaining picks are "auto drafted" by the engine whenever we do a file update (which could be several picks later), and you don't get your allotted time for your future picks. So for the purposes of this league, your current and future picks are skipped and the rest of the league moves forward until you make up your selections with whatever players remain, or contact an admin.

With this strategy (we actually do 6 hours for rounds 2 and 3, not 4 hours), the CSFL completes 96 picks in under one week. We got through 53 picks (the typical number we have here after forfeits) in 3.5 days in our most recent draft, because responsible teams sent lists to admins and we only had a couple teams take the full 8 hours.

Thoughts for next year and beyond?

I would 2nd this. It works very well in our league and we have international players as well.

I'm okay with this. This seems logical IMO. We could start the draft officially sooner, as unnoficially starting it wouldn't be necessary anymore.

we do this in the CSFL still, the draft unofficially starts the second the scouting sim is run in DDSPF, and then we give teams like a day or two to look over everything before timers officially begin

I'm with whatever makes the draft run smoothly. 18 seasons every draft has had a little hiccup.

Yeah that's where it becomes confusing and why a set time has proven to work ultimately. Even in 18 seasons, the draft has been pretty good (besides a few gm's). Why fix something that isn't broken?

Definitely open to anything that works for the league as a whole. Also in support of a 12 hour trade clock for the 2nd round at minimum though.

I think the slotting system is fine. A floating time disadvantages time zone differences.

Yes and no I guess.

Yes because it sounds good but with 8 hour windows, there is the chance a bunch of picks could occur quickly then you don't check, go to sleep, whatever reason and that 8 hour window starting from the last pick is gone and you do nothing wrong but miss it. Not sure I like that.

Plus I like fixed in knowing exactly when I pick. I think there's 2 issues with it though. Starting the draft early is the main one as it allows a bunch of picks to be posted then way too much time builds up until the deadline of the next or you get an inactive GM with so much time to pick. Just start it and slot times together fixes that though.

The other is slot time. Might not be an issue if we don't start the draft early and slots are followed but with 3 hour windows, there's a chance it could get ahead. Shorter windows fixes that and you know exactly when you're going to pick so send a list. May not be an issue even at 3 hours if we don't start the draft early, I feel that creates issues.

In saying all that, why are we so hell bent on rushing it anyway. One of the better times of the year, trade talks are rampant, forum activity is good, even Tim is about haha so it's an enjoyable time. A little downtime between picks is fine but I think if we just started the draft and that was it, it would probably be okay.

I like this idea a lot.
This team is garbage.

I personally only care because we don't update mid draft and I would love to see my rookies sooner. Wish we did that... but anyway just an efficiency suggestion. We run a full NFL draft in almost the same time the draft takes here.

I think time slots are better. It would be really rare for a team to have 24 hrs to pick. It would take 8 picks in a row.

Unless you start the draft 5 days before you start the draft. If that didnt happen the draft would be smooth.
