Advanced stats: Teams edition

Post by mgtr81 »

Today we have the first edition of a new advanced stats series. We look at how teams are actually performing on different facets of the game as of February 22nd, 2027, in-game date. (I tried to post this in the Stats section but I don't have permission).

The first stat that we present is one that I think gives a pretty good idea of a team's performance: scoring ratio. That is, points scored divided by opponent points. There are seven teams with a scoring ratio over 1.05, which is pretty good:

1. Detroit Pistons: 1.113
2. Milwaukee Bucks: 1.093
3. Brooklyn Nets: 1.087
4. Miami Heat: 1.074
5. New York Knicks: 1.063
6. Phoenix Suns: 1.053
7. Sacramento Kings: 1.052

This correlates really well with the standings, with only the Atlanta Hawks missing from the Top 8 teams record wise (they have a 1.034 scoring ratio, 11th overall). As for the bottom of the CSL, there are five teams below 0.95:

26. Memphis Grizzlies: 0.943
27. Orlando Magic: 0.937
28. Washington Wizards: 0.904
29. Oklahoma City Thunder: 0.902
30. San Antonio Spurs: 0.874

These five teams are also the bottom five teams record wise. As expected, scoring ratio is a great indicator of a team's performance. Nothing surprising here. Next we have a more vague indicator as it is the rebounding ratio (team rebounds divided by opponent rebounds). This does not give a powerful indicator as the scoring ratio, but still gives a good idea of a team potential to have and prevent second chances. There are five teams above 1.05:

1. Detroit Pistons: 1.182
2. New York Knicks: 1.169
3. Sacramento Kings: 1.137
4. Brooklyn Nets: 1.136
5. Atlanta Hawks: 1.089

Here we see the Hawks appearing, kind of compensating their "low" scoring ratio position compared to their actual standings position. Past the overall game, if we focus on offensive production we have two key stats: true shooting percentage and points per 100 possessions. The former yields six teams over 55 %:

1. Phoenix Suns: 56.79 %
2. Miami Heat: 55.78 %
3. Detroit Pistons: 55.74 %
4. Los Angeles Clippers: 55.46 %
5. Dallas Mavericks: 55.07 %
6. Minnesota Timberwolves: 55.04 %

If we look at points per 100 possessions, we find 10 teams scoring over 105 points per 100 possessions:

1. Miami Heat: 111.87
2. Detroit Pistons: 110.17
3. Phoenix Suns: 109.16
4. New York Knicks: 107.93
5. Milwaukee Bucks: 107.30
6. Denver Nuggets: 106.33
7. Los Angeles Clippers: 106.26
8. Sacramento Kings: 106.25
9. Minnesota Timberwolves: 105.59
10. Utah Jazz: 105.01

Some great offensive teams appearing here do not have a great record. AS we know, this is a two-way game so defense is jus as important. If we take a look at defensive in those two categories we get close to a full picture. There are seven teams keeping opponents below 53 % in true shooting percentage:

1. Golden State Warriors: 50.63 %
2. Indiana Pacers: 51.72 %
3. Charlotte Hornets: 51.81 %
4. Milwaukee Bucks: 51.84 %
5. Atlanta Hawks: 52.15 %
6. Los Angeles Clippers: 52.37 %
7. Toronto Raptors: 52.95 %

If we take a look at opponents points per 100 possessions, we find only three teams keeping opponents below 100 points per 100 possessions:

1. Brooklyn Nets: 96.25
2. Milwaukee Bucks: 98.20
3. Detroit Pistons: 98.96

This gives us a good idea of where each team wins its games. Out of the top eight teams in the standings (those with a winning percentage above 60 %) we find three type of teams: balanced (Detroit, New York, Sacramento), offense based (Miami, Phoenix) and defense based (Brookyln, Milwaukee, Atlanta).

We will be back next month with advanced stats for players.

Love this analysis thanks Manu. The Pistons and the Nets are absolutely dominant, even in a difficult East. Big props to both coaches

This is great Manu. Actually gives you a look at some areas you weren't sure you were lacking in.

Like sometimes you just look at key guys (MPJ for example) and because he's a high usage player with a great TS%, it's all fine but we're not great there when we have other guys dragging us down.

Puts the spotlight on a few areas we need to improve in.

Well it's nice to see that we're one of the better defensive teams. Still haven't quite locked things in yet though.

As always very insightful Manu!!!

I guess we fell quite a bit after our trade deadline shuffle. We can't find a good rhythm since then and we may have just a big depth problem for the rest of the season.

At the time you took the stats it pretty much mirrors the team we are/were. Solid, defense oriented but limited on offense.

Interesting to see the team stats here and somewhat surprised to see us high up in some of these stats since not too much has changed from last year outside of some personnel moves.

Love seeing the Nets take that next step this year and seeing Phoenix considered an "offense-based" team now feels odd to me.

Yeah man it's been a rough few years for New York. Glad I was able to come in and provide a winning environment and make Zion and JJJ shine.

I still feel we aren't "there" yet, and that hinders on Hero, Pelicans pick next year, or trades to get us that 6th man scorer.
