Gauging interest: CSL Rank Offseason 2027

Post by KW »

I'm thinking about organizing a project similar to the annual NBA Rank that ESPN and SI run most years, and the CSL Top 100 one that (correct me if I'm wrong) Marcos and Myles did years ago.

There's a few different ways I'd think about running it:

1) A team rates the players (on a scale of 0 to 10) in their division and we average the ratings to get a player score.

2) Each team rates the players in another division (eliminates potential bias but less familiarity with the players they're rating)

3) Each team rates players of a particular position

4) A group of a GMs rates all players

In any of the first 3, we'd whittle the list down to the top ~150 and then get a smaller group of GMs to rate them to find the top 100.

Let me know if this project is of interest, and in what capacity you'd be willing to participate! Ideally, all 30 teams could participate and rate 75-90 players each but I'm not going to force anybody to do anything. As long as each player has 3 data points I can average together, I feel comfortable this project will be fun and valuable for the league.

i like the idea but not every gm is active ( cough ) so you might not get everyone to vote

maybe select the top 5 players from each team then go from there?

I honestly feel like this is a lot of work that people won't have time for. We have trouble getting people to participate in much less time-intensive things.

I think if the idea is to come up with a top 100 then ranking all 450 players is somewhat excessive.

Top 100 is what 3 players per team on average - so if somebody like KW could do a sanity check on how many players have a legit chance of making top 100, we could narrow it down significantly. Maybe no more than 5 players per team. Now you can rank 20 players per division instead of 75.

I look at Grizz and there maybe 2 - Culver/Bruno - that are legit candidates and a third one in Varnado who maybe has a chance. But no need to bother with the rest.
Congrats to season 16 ASL champion SoulKey. For the Swarm!

A handful of GMs is probably easiest. In any case though, I'd be down to help.

I agree that it will probably be hard to get everyone to rank players, but if a good handful of GMs are free to help I think thats the best way to go.

I could probably help a bit, but with the off-season coming up it might be bad timing. Let me know though.

Pretty fair point about the lower tier of players not necessarily needing to be ranked to create a top 100. The original list of players can be cut down substantially to 150-200, with about 4-8 representatives from each team.

I like the idea, but honestly, I won't have the required time to participate. I'm sorry. Good luck with this project.

Same and no surprise I'm sure. Love the idea but there's no chance I'm going to get a ranking list over to anyone in any decent amount of time. That, and I have no idea who half the league is so my ratings won't matter much.

Hopefully you can figure it out because it would certainly be cool to see.

Cool idea and what Andrei said is spot on.

Anyway, I'm down to help/vote plus I feel like a range of responses would help iron out the averages a little as we all have our own opinions.
