CSL StatStuff: League Needs: Rebounds

Post by andrei »

Disclaimer: Below data is as of 12th March in game. All players are active players signed to CSL teams from HTML.
There are currently 420 active players with 87 PGs, 87 SGs, 84 SFs, 83 PFs and 79 Cs.

This is a series of articles that we'd like to write that answers two questions:

1) Where is the league overall in terms of ratings? What kind of players we have and what kind of players we are lacking i.e. do we have too many players with high Steals rating or too few? Perhaps this may help the draft department somehow in the years to come.
2) There are a lot of discussions, in particular during FA and Draft where GMs say: this player is average at scoring or average at rebounding. So what is average? With each category (Scoring, Defense etc) presented, we also show the average rating per category. Final article will show all averages for all ratings.

Rebounds

Are we happy with the rebounders we have in CSL?

The graph above is an interesting one. It shows the intersection of the various Offensive and Defensive rebounding ratings we have in CSL. As you can see the majority is scattered within the 59/59 limits of both axis' which probably makes sense. Everybody above that are in the above average and elite categories.

Interesting also is that we have a few very weird players that are either elite offensive rebounders and awful on the defensive glass of vice versa. Players worth noting here are Sim Bhullar with elite 87 ORB but pretty awful 51 DRB or Marcus Morris with 82 ORB and a pathetic 33 DRB. On the other side of the spectrum we see Satnam Singh with 86 DRB and 43 ORB. Does that make sense? Can we have a player who fights hard on the one side of the glass but takes some time off on another? Dirk Nowitzki comes to mind who once averaged double figures rebounding despite barely grabbing one on the offensive glass. But he is a perimeter player and rarely bangs inside. Singh is a center who rarely shoots jumpers...

Here is an overview of the Offensive Rebounds rating:

Image

Only 15 PGs/SGs even bother looking at the ball after someone shoots it. Our perimeter players prefer to get back on defense and/or press. 36% of SFs are at 50 or above and 14% at 60 or above.

Seems that the pressure of fighting for rebounds on offense lies with PFs and Cs. Both positions are equally impressive on the offensive glass.

53% of PFs and 54% of Cs are at 60 or above.
31% of PFs and 32% of Cs are at 70 or above.
14% of PFs and 13% of Cs are at 80 or above.

Here is an overview of the Defensive Rebounds rating:

Image

The situation is slightly different here, especially on the perimeter. We encourage some of our guards to grab defensive rebounds with 34% of SGs and 22% of PGs are at 50 or above. Looking even higher at SF where 25% are at 60 or above and an impressive 70% are at 50 or above.

Looks like PFs and Cs are getting plenty of help here. But do they need it? Not so much.

60% of PFs and 66% of Cs are at 60 or above.
19% of PFs and 28% of Cs are at 70 or above.
7% of PFs and 8% of Cs are at 80 or above.

Compared to offensive boards, there are less elite defensive rebounders and more players have high but not very high/elite ratings. Also, Cs are much more adept at dominating the defensive glass than PFs according to our ratings.

Agree the combination of high DRBD and low ORBD or vice versa is a bit weird.
But at the end, I think the rebounds are quite representative of the reality and you can also boost them for a player with tactics (Alex Len in 2015 with Phoenix : 8.9rbd a game)

Good stuff, yeah there are some odd rebounders for sure. Marcus Morris is such a strong offensive rebounder who is worse at defensive rebounding than guards lol.
Big changes are coming in D.C.

The rebounding is a little weird in the league, but I tend to lean towards players with good ORB over DRB since that leads to more second chance points and I try to build my team around having more possessions than the opponent.

Yeah it appears Drebs are easier to get. Hence, a lower Dreb rating isnt such a big problem. Offensive rebounds are harder to grab though.
I actually like the distribution of ratings as a high 50s mid 60s rebound rating already means the player is a decent rebounder (when he's tall enough), so having some Rodman like specialists that are way above average is cool (think about Stone, Stokes etc.). It makes them valuable players despite being below mediocre in every other category.

I believe we have way too little DEFENSIVE rebounding specialists. Those are highly valued at the NBA where you need to secure the boards at your table to finish possessions.. Plus teams are running the break and tend not to attack ORBs... But overall it's also a good thing in the league, along the steals / blocks.
