CSL StatStuff: Home vs Away

Post by andrei »

If you look at DDS3 team statistics, it is quite easy to see each team’s points per game. However, one thing that would be useful but quite tough to get is team scores at home vs away.

What is the team that scores the most points at Home? What is the team that plays the best Defense at Home in terms opponent’s points per game? What is the team that has the highest difference?

Similarly, is there a way to get an answer to these questions for Away games?

Turn out, there is.

So let’s get right into it – what is the highest scoring Home Team in CSL?

1 Chicago 122.0
2 Houston 117.8
3 Memphis 114.8
4 Washington 112.5
5 Charlotte 112.1
6 Los Angeles (L) 111.8
7 Phoenix 111.6
8 Boston 111.0
9 Sacramento 110.9
10 Portland 110.7
11 Minnesota 110.3
12 New Orleans 109.2
13 Philadelphia 108.8
14 New York 108.2
15 Utah 108.1
16 Toronto 107.8
17 Orlando 107.0
18 Dallas 106.0
19 Denver 105.3
20 Milwaukee 105.3
21 Detroit 105.2
22 Cleveland 103.5
23 Brooklyn 103.4
24 Miami 103.3
25 Los Angeles (C) 103.2
26 Indiana 102.2
27 Golden State 101.1
28 Atlanta 100.9
29 Oklahoma City 100.9
30 San Antonio 98.2

Ok, we got some interesting scores there. 11 teams average more than 110 points per game at home. The Spurs is the only team in the entire CSL to average less than 100 points at home. CSL average is at 107.6 at home.

What about Defense? Let’s have a look at top defensive teams in terms of average points allowed and difference between average scored per game and average allowed per game.

Team.. Average of Opponent Score.. Difference
1 Sacramento 87.3 23.7
2 Miami 92.3 11.0
3 Orlando 92.6 14.4
4 Boston 93.5 17.6
5 Detroit 93.9 11.3
6 San Antonio 94.6 3.6
7 New Orleans 95.7 13.6
8 Los Angeles (C) 97.2 6.0
9 Minnesota 99.3 11.1
10 Golden State 99.5 1.6
11 Memphis 100.5 14.3
12 Phoenix 100.9 10.7
13 Philadelphia 101.2 7.6
14 Oklahoma City 102.0 -1.1
15 Utah 102.2 5.9
16 Chicago 102.6 19.3
17 New York 102.8 5.3
18 Washington 103.1 9.4
19 Indiana 103.1 -1.0
20 Atlanta 104.5 -3.6
21 Houston 105.0 12.8
22 Brooklyn 105.8 -2.4
23 Toronto 106.4 1.4
24 Denver 107.2 -1.9
25 Portland 108.4 2.3
26 Cleveland 109.3 -5.8
27 Milwaukee 109.5 -4.2
28 Dallas 110.3 -4.4
29 Los Angeles (L) 110.8 1.0
30 Charlotte 114.0 -1.9

Perhaps not surprising but Sacramento plays the best defense at home in terms of Opponent points per game. They allow only 87.3 points at home and outscore the opponent by a whopping 23.7 points per game. Overall we have 11 teams that score 10+ more points at home than their opponent. At the other side of the spectrum we have 9 teams that get outscored by their opponent at home with Dallas being at the bottom of the list with minus 4.4 ppg. Perhaps being in SouthWest has something to do with it!

Now, let’s have a look at top scoring Road teams.

1 Houston 112.9
2 Memphis 110.5
3 Chicago 108.0
4 Minnesota 107.1
5 Orlando 106.9
6 Boston 106.6
7 Philadelphia 106.6
8 Detroit 106.0
9 Cleveland 105.9
10 Phoenix 105.9
11 New Orleans 104.8
12 New York 104.4
13 Utah 104.2
14 Los Angeles (L) 103.0
15 Charlotte 102.5
16 Denver 101.4
17 Atlanta 100.7
18 Washington 100.5
19 Indiana 99.5
20 Miami 99.0
21 Dallas 99.0
22 Portland 98.0
23 Sacramento 98.0
24 Toronto 97.9
25 Milwaukee 96.4
26 Los Angeles (C) 94.7
27 San Antonio 94.6
28 Oklahoma City 93.9
29 Golden State 93.5
30 Brooklyn 91.6

Top 3 remain the same. Unlike at Home, we have only 2 teams averaging more than 110 points per game on the road (vs 11 at Home) and 18 teams averaging 100+ on the road (vs 29 at Home). Interesting also to notice a team like WAS that is 4th in scoring at home but drops all the way to 18th on the Road. Defensive powerhouse SAC also had a noticeable drop from 9th to 23rd.

Finally, similar to our home team analysis, lets see the top defensive road teams in terms of average opponent points per game and difference with average team points per game.

Team.. Average of Opponent Score.. Difference
1 Sacramento 92.0 6.0
2 Detroit 97.9 8.2
3 Chicago 99.1 8.9
4 Miami 99.6 -0.6
5 Boston 100.9 5.8
6 Washington 102.5 -2.0
7 Los Angeles (C) 102.8 -8.0
8 Houston 104.4 8.5
9 Orlando 104.7 2.2
10 Minnesota 106.0 1.1
11 Indiana 106.1 -6.7
12 San Antonio 106.2 -11.7
13 New York 106.6 -2.2
14 Brooklyn 106.6 -15.0
15 New Orleans 107.5 -2.7
16 Phoenix 108.2 -2.2
17 Utah 108.5 -4.3
18 Oklahoma City 108.8 -14.8
19 Golden State 109.2 -15.7
20 Philadelphia 110.8 -4.2
21 Milwaukee 111.7 -15.3
22 Portland 112.0 -13.9
23 Memphis 112.6 -2.1
24 Denver 113.1 -11.7
25 Toronto 113.1 -15.3
26 Cleveland 115.7 -9.8
27 Dallas 115.7 -16.7
28 Atlanta 116.3 -15.7
29 Charlotte 117.3 -14.8
30 Los Angeles (L) 117.3 -14.3

Sacramento is at the top in terms of average points allowed but no longer lead in Difference. They outscore their opponents by 6 points on the Road which placed them 4th in Difference behind Detroit, Chicago and Houston. Overall we have only 7 teams that manage to average more points scored on the road than their opponent (vs 21 at Home).
Congrats to season 16 ASL champion SoulKey. For the Swarm!

That's a very underrated stat line right there.

I love where we are. We are consistent enough offensively to win games at home and when we go play at road, usually it's a defense-first approach. Overall, the offense is much better at home but that's expected even because of the number of FT attempted. But I like the approach, and the point differential shows we've been really good at the road this year, and this coming after 6 of 7 games in our longest road trip of the year, in which we have faced 5 playoff-bound western squads.

Great one andrei, thanks for the analysis!

We manage to play better defense on the road than at home somehow.

Sacramento being 22-1 with a differential of +23.7 at home is just insane.

This is real interesting. I guess if we could grab the top seed out west by seasons end, we would be tough to beat but if we didn't, it will be tough for us to get those road wins.

Older players play better on the road?

Very interesting indeed, we're actually very consistent scoring at home (107) and away (106.9)
and defensively we're very solid at home but on the road is where we suffer a big setback.

Nice stuff!

That last stat is the most important and you can tell by looking at records. Congrats Chicago for being the top dog there.
