Quiet Rumblings in New Orleans

Post by Ramcus »

A solid 34 games into the season, the New Orleans Pelicans have gone through some highs, some lows, and all the in between. Specifically in the guard rotation, the Pelicans started the season with fan favourite Joe Jackson as starting point guard. This quickly became a problem, as, as much as Jackson was playing admirably, he wasn't as effective as expected.
During this time, a free agent signing was quickly rising off the bench. Aquille Carr, a 5'5 guard who played for the Dallas Mavericks last season. In his first game as a starter, Carr scored 17 points and collected 5 assists in a loss to the Houston Rockets(11/22, NOP 118-131 HOU). In spite of the lost, Carr showed he had a clear aptitude for the starting point guard position.
Since I'm comparing the shit out of 2 expiring point guards, might as well put their numbers up

Joe Jackson: 34 Games Played/ 18 Games Started/ 20 Minutes
5.1 Points/ 4.7 Assists/ 1.9 Rebounds/ 0.4 Steals/ 1.1 Turnovers/ 2 Fouls
40.1% FG/ 33.3% 3FG/ 85% FT

Aquille Carr: 34 Games Played/ 10 Games Started/ 18.3 Minutes
9.3 Points/ 3.9 Assists/ 1.9 Rebounds/ 0.5 Steals/ 0.9 Turnovers/ 2.7 Fouls
40.8% FG/ 24% 3FG/ 68.5% FT

What does this tell us? Well, it tells us a lot, and it's also missing a lot of context. Jackson, before the last 2 games, was shooting below 40% from the field. Aquille Carr, before the last 4 games, was shooting above 42% from the field. It tells us that Jackson and Carr are both fairly streaky players in their current situation. Carr runs an offense better, but is more of a liability on defense(understandable, as he's 5 freaking '5). Jackson puts up less on the box score.

If we look at the advanced numbers, we can see that Jackson shines on the defensive end, while Carr is a massive liability. Jackson may not be flashy but he's a lockdown defender. At 92.4 STP%(Drive Stop Percentage), he's stopping all players at the perimeter.

Well... what does all this tell us? It tells us that both players are useful in different situations, for different purposes. In general, Jackson serves better as a starter, as he's a nightmare on the defensive end, and this is a guard driven league. Carr serves better as a high energy guy off the bench, who blows up the box score in limited minutes. But also, Carr can be used as a starter against weaker defenders, and Jackson can come off the bench to confidently run the offense without blowing up the box score.

I need a better point guard to start

I personally prefer Jackson to Carr, but if hes getting you wins and this rotation is working then just keep that train rolling. With a legitimate play making PG though, this team would be very dangerous.

Yeah, this team is a PG away from being a damn good team.
