The Brian Schmitz Report: #Zone9

Post by WillyJakkz »

Brian Schmitz: The Orlando Magic traded GF Justin Anderson, PF Marquese Chriss, and their 2023 1st Rd Pick in exchange for NY Knicks PG George DePaula.

Out of nowhere the Magic acquired PG George DePaula in what escalated into a deal being completed rather quickly.

GM WillyJakkz:
We scanned rosters, we knew what we wanted, and we knew we could get a deal done without the long drawn out talks that result into just talks. We targeted DePaula who we feel with his height and passing ability will be a great match with Andrew's length and height giving other teams backcourts problems.

We moved Justin simply due to it coming down to who will play better at SG, he or Andrew Wiggins? The other decision was are we bringing Marquese Chriss back or not next season and looking at the finances we decided it was key for us to bring Robert Covington back so we knew during the offseason Chriss had to be moved.

Lastly our draft pick was the final piece so ultimately we looked at it as the 2024 New Orleans 1st we gained in the Brandon Knight trade which became Justin Anderson for us. So basically 2 1sts and Marquese Chriss whom we were going to let walk for a franchise PG is a fantastic deal for us.

JVG: Ultimately it came down to fit... We feel George is going to be great with our guys and look forward to getting the the guys acclimated to each other.

Let the naysayers talk, the Magic also have started a new hashtag for now.

We had hardly any three point shooting and have been successful so it's doable but you have to get the right system or there's no answer to a high zone here.

I mean, Wiggins took 19 threes in your last game and is shooting 23% from behind the arc this season. Imagine him and DePaula doing the same. Could get ugly regardless of the twin towers.

It might look terrible even if you add a top tier shooter.. Dennis lost to Miami last postseason even though he had McLemore shooting the lights out to counter the zone..

This is one of the most talented teams yet one of the easiest to game plan against in our league, unfortunately. And your defense can’t force turnovers enough to compensate for the other team zoning.

Yeah I had talked to one of the best strategists here about how to best use the Twin Towers so will definitely give it a shot.

Also I will definitely need to do another sub matrix to get Ross more playing time since he is a very good 3pt shooter.

We still have some moves to look at as well but that zone 9 is already gonna be in effect against us lol but luckily we rebound and block well to help some with that and with DePaula's passing I hope it gets Wiggins and Embiid even more shots

Hmm I wonder what it would look like if you ran double post with both Drummond and Embiid on the floor at the same time against the zone. Could force your best scorers to shoot more often even against a high zone. No idea if it would work or not but worth the experiment. Would beat having Wiggins jack up 19 threes.

I think this team is a good example of "we have many stars, but they dont work together at all". I think no one gonna deny that Drummond is a top5 Center & Wiggins a top 5-8 Wing. However, add in a top10 PG and another top10 Center that doesnt fit at all and you still wont win many games. Best solution would be to trade Embiid for better fit. Defensive PF plus 3point shooting winger. Would put this team into playoff contention.
