A Smart Update

Suitors List Narrows; No Decision Coming Soon
Image
Marcus Smart is chilling while he waits to find out what happens next

For a moment, it looked like Scenario #7 was going to happen - a four-way trade that would have sent Marcus Smart to a contender and resulted in the Portland Trailblazers landing a young big and a young perimeter player who could grow into offsetting Nassir Little's shooting inefficiencies. But then the fourth team declined in favor of another offer, and it was back to the drawing board for Portland.

Along the way, we've had some suitors drop out from the Smart sweepstakes and gotten more information about what some of the remaining bidders are offering. So without further ado, your latest updates:

Suitor #1
Formalized their offer as the young big, a mid-career excellent defending wing, and a projected late first for Smart. That wing would step into the starting rotation and be an attractive trade piece at the deadline for contenders.

Suitor #2
They've continued to mirror Suitor #1 by offering the young big, a mid-career two-way guard who has become a solid defender, and a projected late future first. Like Suitor 1's offer, the mid-career player would be a Day 1 lineup player and function as deadline trade bait for contenders. The caveat? They wanted Jalen Brunson or Grant Williams added. Portland refused. So it remains to be seen if Suitor 2 will match Suitor 1 and see which narrow edges win, or if they drop out.

Suitor #3
Dropped out. They're instead focusing their efforts on Grant Williams and appear close to dangling an uncertain value future first, which the Blazers are still looking at.

Suitor #4
Dropped out after deciding Smart wasn't in their best interests after all.

Suitor #5
Has yet to make an offer, but they're still potentially in play due to the gridlock up top.

Scenario #6
There's a distinct possibility that Portland doesn't trade Smart this offseason. According to one team official speaking anonymously, "We're looking at two solid offers, but not necessarily exciting ones. It's still an option for us to run it back with Smart and Nikola Mirotic and see what happens at the deadline."

With regards to the Suitor 1 vs Suitor 2 debate if they decide to go head-to-head with their similar offers, the source remarked, "Man, that would be a tough one. There's certain things about the respective players involved where, for example, one of the bigs is better in some areas, the other big is better at some others. Same thing with the wing vs the guard. And the picks are probably a wash - they're both projecting as late firsts. So, so close. And of course, we still don't know for sure what #5 will offer, though we have some ideas of what that might involve."

Asked about the percentages between a deal happening or not, the source shrugged. "I mean, it's hard to say, really. Ultimately it comes down to, are we happy with the floor once all offers come out and are finalized, or would we feel more comfortable gambling on the deadline's ceiling?"

In a smaller move, a tentative verbal has been concluded for Jordan Clarkson

Long-time Blazer Jordan Clarkson has a tentative verbal in place that will see him leave Rip City, pending the finances of the trade partner. A small move, reports are the return is a veteran wing might see time at SF and an interesting young forward who is worth getting some consistent minutes early in the season to see how he looks.

"Not a trade that moves the needle," said a front office employee, "Honestly it'll more immediately benefit the other team. But we were selling Clarkson cheaply due to our backcourt logjam and we're intrigued enough by the kid coming in to give him a shot to show what he can do."

Well, I don't believe Smart starts the season in Portland. Why? Bc Joe Ingles' deal means committing to a rebuild. And why risk a possible injury for a soon to be 31 years old player when you can get fairly good (if not exceptional) packages for him already? I don't understand the logic, specially after bringing in so many guards from the rumored Ingles deal.

Remain interested in seeing what happens with Smart, at this point I can't really guess.
