Cetlics - Searching for the Deal

Post by Dennis »

Boston, Massachussetts - already two months into the season and still no deals closed by the Celtics. Did the management fell asleep? That's what many fans are asking themselves. While many franchises strike deal after deal - for example Oklahoma or San Antonio - there has just been no movements on the trade market for the Celtics. But what is the hold up? Are the Celtics active enough on the market? Do they have the assets needed to find a deal? Or is their team just set?

What is really needed?
Sitting at 23-6 the Celtics have a well balanced team. So the question is, where are the weaknesses and what has to be improved. While the management already adressed many wholes over the past few years. For example 3pt shooting by drafting Miles Bridges or rebounding by trading for Tristan Thompson, there are still wholes to fill. Question is what are those? The franchise knows it, but the needed upgrades are tough to get. Offers are sent out on a regular basis, but the few players fitting the needs are franchiseplayers and are just not yet on the market.

Who could be moved?
The Celtics gathered many movable assets they are willing to part with. Defensive studs like Michael Gbinije and Aaron Gordon, offensive weapons like Kevin Knox - who right now isnt seeing any minutes due to a crowded team - or elite playmakers like David Michineau. On Boston has still some picks left to add in any deal. Next to their firsts, the first round pick of Charlotte this year and Cleveland's next years. Rumors are saying nearly everybody can be moved but De'Aron Fox, Miles Bridges, Isaia Cordinier and Skal Labissiere. Skal might be the only exception if an upgrade at C could be landed.

Outlook for the next Months
Sitting at 23-6 every GM should be fine, but the losses so far came against the top of pops. Like every year that includes Sacramento, Phoenix and Miami. With Oklahomo dropping out of the top, it appears the Houston Rockets are back at the top - and even to that team the Celtics already lost at home. That's just not acceptable and nearly resulted in the coach getting fired. So it shows moves are needed to keep up with the best. The Celtics are still young and intenal development might help getting even closer to a title, but so are Miami and Phoenix and the (again) upcoming Detroit Pistons. So the chances for further moves by Boston are fairly high. Odds are that Michael Gbinije will be moved before the deadline by 90%, Kevin Knox by 70%, Aaron Gordon by 60% and Kevin Knox as well as Skal Labissiere at 50%. The only question will be, what is coming back? Can the Celtics consolidate or will it be smaller moves that includes picks and you joining the franchise?

I am very curious to see if a move will be made here, as I think your team is sitting comfortably on top right now, and you might just stick with this roster.

I don't think anyone meets Dennis's demands on his young players and he holds on to most of them. I'm thinking he either doesn't make a major deal or he packages Gordon+Michineau for an upgrade somewhere or a future 1st from an average team that somehow becomes shitty and conveys him a top 8 pick in a couple years like always.

We have been hearing that Knox is on the move for so long that I'm waiting for a rebuilding team to decide to turn the team over to him as the #1 scoring option and give it a shot.

I think the Celtics will stand pat I can see them changing their value enough on their guys to make a move. Unless someone stumps up and takes a huge gamble on Knox as Rizzo said or of Dennis finally cashes in on getting a proven star to go for it now but shorten the elite timeline a bit.

I actually dont think my evaluation is too high. Tbh didnt even talk any deals around Knox or Gbinije for a long time for example. I barely get offers for my young guns and rarely send one out due to not having any player I really want to have on my team. So Im not entirely sure where the evaluation thingy comes from. Turned down an offer by Willy that I shouldnt have turned down, no doubt. But by that time reallife was super crazy and I just didnt had much time to think that one through lol. Despite that (or lets say since then) the trademarket was fairly boring.

Actually there are not many stars that would be an upgrade of use for us. Davis would be, but like said in the chat, I wont offer for him due to reasons.

I think the Celtics are the top team in the East so I wouldn’t make any major moves, but you are in the Miami predicament where all of those young guys are going to be handed out max contracts in the next year or two and it will be interesting to see how creative you get with finances.

Reasons being I backed out of a verbal, so now you don't want to trade with me. Understandable, but that means you're missing out on even an offer.

Major reason is, that no matter how good the offer is, people will call it a bad trade for you. They did the same when I traded Westbrook. Most GMs are unable to see the long term impacts. So, not really interested in creating such a shit storm haha. Also I pretty much never trade with new guys unless its a deal that will be seen as very fair, even by not so knowledgable GMs.

I should have added: besides that, I don’t think Marcus really wants to trade him.
