Advanced stats: Players edition

Post by mgtr81 »

We continue our series on advanced stats by looking this time at normalized stats for players. That takes into account both teams pace and players playing time, and gives a better idea of a players performance than traditional stats. That being said, players who have played for more than one team during the season see their normalized stats affected, as the pace used is the one for his current team. Only players playing at least 25 minutes per game are included here.(Thanks to Andre for exporting the raw stats from the game).

The first stat that we are looking at is normalized scoring. As all normalized data in this article (except true shooting percentage), the corresponding stat (in this case points per game) is multiplied by team's pace divided by 100 and also multiplied by 36 divided by playing time (in minutes per game). This is how the top 10 looks like:

1. Michael Porter (SAC): 40.72
2. Zion Williamson (NYK): 38.69
3. Isaiah Taylor (PHO): 36.36
4. Marcus Smart (ATL): 35.95
5. Isaiah Cousins (LAC): 33.97
6. DeAron Fox (BOS): 31.51
7. Luka Doncic (DAL): 31.15
8. Jayson Tatum (DEN): 30.79
9. Jabari Parker (DET): 29.22
10. Malik Monk (HOU): 28.39

Porter is the clear winner here and given his efficiency we could say he's the best pure scorer in the CSL. It is also worth noting that there are eight players above 30 normalized points per game, which is exceptional. Of course, who they play next to has an obvious influence. Secondly we look at rebounding, and find this Top 10:

1. Pascal Siakam (DAL): 14.65
2. Hassan Whiteside (BOS): 14.51
3. Stanley Johnson Jr. (DET): 13.83
4. Wendell Carter (MIL): 13.79
5. Joel Embiid (UTA): 13.45
6. Bruno Fernando (MEM): 13.25
7. Mohamed Bamba (TOR): 13.10
8. Dedric Lawson (PHO): 12.99
9. Deyonta Davis (OKC): 12.98
10. Michael Young (DEN): 12.93

Moving on from big men to playmakers, this is the Top 10 in the CSL regarding assists:

1. Tyler Ulis (BKN): 13.51
2. George DePaula (NYK): 12.11
3. Lonzo Ball (PHI): 10.58
4. Jaylen Adams (SAC): 9.96
5. Coby White (GSW): 9.75
6. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander (BKN): 9.39
7. Milos Teodosic (ORL): 9.33
8. Jalen Brunson (CHI): 9.32
9. Frank Ntilikina (DET): 8.86
10. Luka Doncic (DAL): 8.61

It is pretty impressive for the Nets to have two players in the Top 10 (first and sixth). As for the steals, we have this Top 10:

1. Kaiser Gates (DET): 3.49
2. Terrance Ferguson (NYK): 2.90
3. Justise Winslow (HOU): 2.87
4. Okaro White (CHA): 2.85
5. Shaquille Harrison (PHO): 2.65
6. Frank Ntilikina (DET): 2.64
7. Rui Hachimura (LAL): 2.63
8. Lonzo Ball (PHI): 2.62
9. Elfrid Payton (CLE): 2.52
10. Luka Doncic (DAL): 2.42

Again, here we have a dominant team in the Pistons, with two players in the Top 10 (and again, first and sixth). As for blocking:

1. DeAndre Ayton (BKN): 3.38
2. Bruno Fernando (MEM): 3.15
3. Zach Collins (LAL): 3.14
4. Hassan Whiteside (BOS): 2.98
5. Marvin Bagley (LAC): 2.84
6. Joel Embiid (UTA): 2.80
7. Deyonta Davis (OKC): 2.78
8. Daniel Gafford (MIL): 2.74
9. Zhou Qi (PHO): 2.61
10. Karl-Anthony Towns (HOU): 2.48

Finally, we measure offensive efficiency by true shooting percentage, which yields the following Top 10:

1. Landry Shamet (UTA): 67.36
2. Alex Caruso (PHO): 67.27
3. Jaylen Adams (SAC): 66.75
4. Khris Middleton (MIL): 66.32
5. Malik Monk (HOU): 65.57
6. De'Andre Hunter (DAL): 64.84
7. Terrance Ferguson (NYK): 64.71
8. Justin Anderson (ATL): 64.64
9. Trae Young (CHA): 63.83
10. Markus Howard (OKC): 63.21

That is all for today. We will be back next month with more advanced stats.

Great to see Bruno in there as a top rebounder and sho-blocker. Dude definitly has that DPOY mentality.

I don't get how Embiid is able to rebound like that with such pedestrian ratings.
Congrats to season 16 ASL champion SoulKey. For the Swarm!

I'm liking these type of articles. Shows who's really valuable. Like Ferg for example. He's not worth 13m but he's a big piece for us. And if I can afford his contact, he's worth it.

Not much for our team, unfortunately. Porter and Zion are really impressive.

Interesting that Tim Kempton is not there as a top rebounder. Is this a minutes issue or am I overvaluing his contribution on the glass?

Great stuff Manu, I love these articles.

Porter is just an amazing scorer. Like you said, best pure scorer in the game. Zion is an animal but elsewhere as well so that's amazing he's near Porter but can do so much else.

It's stuff like this that highlights why I love Jaylen Adams too despite his numbers. I know our system and Porter lower his statistical impact but I know his worth is there.

He didn't make the cut. Minimum is 25 mpg.
