League Chat

Post by emplep7 »

Hey,

As most of you are aware, we have a current league chat on Facebook. After getting some feedback on the chat from people who do not have a FB account (or have a vendetta against Mark Zuckerberg), we wanted to explore the option of moving our chat to a less exclusive place (like Slack or Discord or whatever else the kids use these days).

I will also add that I'm pretty old school and don't love the idea of a chat that takes away from forum activity as I appreciate checking the forum, so I'm also fine leaving it as is.

Either way - if you have a chance, please respond to the poll to help with any decisions.

Thanks,
Admin Team

CSL forum, no doubt. I have no idea what any of those other things are or if they're even real.

I'm not on Facebook.

My vote was for Discord. I think if it's between Slack or Discord, the CSFL found out that Discord is far and away better as messages don't ever get deleted on a free server.

I also selfishly voted for Discord because all my other chats are on there. 😀

I voted Facebook because I don't feel like downloading another app and using up more storage.

Plus I use FB anyway.

I would love if we had a chat right here on the forums.

Personally, I think slack/discord might drive some traffic away from the forums as we saw in the CSFL, so I'm a bit hesitant to do that in a media driven league.

I'm OLD school and all for the forum.
Don't need either FB or Discord.

But Kyrus idea about a chat right here is good, never thought about it. Will check that option out.

I use discord to work. It's great for audio, not as good for text, it's not that simple for those who are not used. So of course, voted for the forums chat.

Some sort of chat embedded into the forums would work for me.

Currently using Discord for another league, honestly it’s kind of confusing at times as the notification settings glitches sometimes, and you might not know you have new messages until days later.

The league chat is all I use Facebook for. Down to move to Discord or Slack.

We tried a chat here before. Or maybe that was the NLL. Didn't work for some reason.

We can look into a chat on here, but I agree with what others say about Discord/Slack taking away activity from the forum of a media driven league. It also doesn't sound like the people not on the FB chat would join a new app which is what I was hoping to get at.

We'll keep this open a bit longer while we look into the forum chat potential.

We ran chat in the NLL for a period of time but ended up shutting it down in the end. Not for the reasons above though but because of the impact it had on the server.

Simply we're on a very basic shared server option. The league doesn't use all that many resources, we don't require a lot of bandwidth and that's the cheapest option. Once we activated chat in the NLL, the host contacted me and said there was too much activity for the option we were on (refreshing issues) and we'd need to upgrade to a dedicated server to continue it. So we closed it at the time. We're still on that legacy plan at the moment. We could just activate and see if the host contacts us and what we need to do to keep it active, etc.

Barring all that, the chat is a great feature to a league. It's definitely fun getting on and seeing who is around and talking some shop. As commissioner back then though, what everyone has said here already was my main concern.

GM's loved chat so much that it kind of stopped forum posts. Not media necessarily but even something that would have been a trade post/trade bump was easily now posted in the chat. Whether that's a negative or not depends on what everyone else thinks. Then again, it's at the forums so people are at the forums which is the main thing I guess.

I don't have FB/Discord/Slack so I have no idea how those options would go but like others have said, it would take people away from the forums. Even now, I know a ton of people talk at FB but for us that don't use FB, we all miss out on that stuff already now and I doubt Discord/Slack would be any different.

I use Discord a lot, so I'd be cool with that. Or Facebook. Not Slack, though. Slack is fucking irritating once you have more than one space.
