Creating a College Basketball Sim

Post by Rizzo »

So I'm thinking about getting back into coding/programming as a side hobby. I always get the itch to create something whether it's programming or something like Photoshop. What I think I've decided to try to create is some sort of college basketball sim game. The sim engine won't be anything like DDS with extensive attributes or anything like that, but just very basic ratings - perhaps things like Offense, Defense, Athleticism and Intelligence - and have the game sim out win/loss results based on just the starting lineups for each team.

Another part of college basketball that's fun is recruiting. What I'm asking for from you guys is help with what influences do you think would steer a player one way or the other? I'm talking about things like playing time, program tradition, championship pedigree, etc. Any ideas you guys have please post them!

I’m pretty excited to get back into programming for fun and whenever I have time and think it could be a fun project to work on.

Cool idea.

I'd say who's offering the most money is on potential swing. Academics vs party school. Current roster (Probably same as playing time). Exposure - big conference, on tv (again probably same as pedigree or tradition). .

So as far as recruiting goes, I do like the 5 is the 6 categories that DDS has as a baseline. I think Academics, Location, School Prestige, Conference Prestige, and Playing Time. I think all of those are really important as they definitely do matter. I think a few others that are important are Coach, for example a school like Memphis didn’t have a lot of prestige but when Cal showed up, he was able to get some top recruits. If Coach K were to leave Duke, I’d be willing to bet some of his upcoming recruits would decommit. So Coach is very important.

This one might be lower priority but still something to consider could be offensive/defensive system (maybe a player does or doesn’t want to play in a high tempo offense, or doesn’t want to play in a zone defense, stuff like that).

I’ll be sure to add anything else I think of.

Thanks for the ideas guys. It’s going to take quite some time before I have anything worth showing you guys. Right now I’m trying to decide how to create it for it to be easiest to create and share.
